The problem
A local restaurant was tracking every order on paper tickets and copying the day's totals into a spreadsheet each night. Nobody knew which dishes actually made money, service slowed down at peak hours, and a lost ticket meant a lost order. The off-the-shelf POS systems they tried cost more per month than the problem was worth and still did not match how the kitchen actually worked.
The idea
Build the system around the real workflow instead of forcing the workflow into generic software. One screen for taking orders, one for the kitchen, one for the owner. No training required — if a new waiter cannot use it in five minutes, the interface is wrong.
Building it
How it came together, step by step.
Mapping the real workflow
Two shifts spent behind the counter writing down every step: how an order is taken, where it goes, who touches it, what breaks. The data model came out of that notebook, not out of a tutorial.
Editor
The order screen first
The screen used three hundred times a day gets built first. Large touch targets, no nested menus, and a running total that never leaves the thumb's reach.
Interface
Kitchen display on a spare tablet
Orders arrive in real time through Livewire polling. Colour shifts as a ticket ages, so the kitchen can see delay before the customer feels it.
Mobile
Reports the owner actually opens
One page: revenue, best sellers, slow hours, weekly comparison. Everything else was cut after the owner ignored it two weeks running.
Terminal
Features
What it actually does.
Order management
Take, modify and close orders in seconds. Split bills, apply discounts, reopen a closed ticket when the table orders one more coffee.
Table map
A visual floor plan showing what is occupied, what is waiting and what has already paid.
Kitchen display
Live ticket queue with ageing colours, running on whatever tablet the kitchen already had.
Customer history
Recurring customers, what they usually order and how much they have spent this year.
Daily reporting
Revenue, best sellers and slow hours, closed out automatically at the end of service.
Offline-tolerant
The order screen keeps working through a dropped connection and syncs when the network returns.
